Are you worried about your health? Do you want to lose weight? Are you a diabetic concerned about your blood glucose levels? Then A Low GI Diet Glycemic Index Search is the perfect tool for you. For the last 3 years this iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad app has been helping 1,000s of people maintain a healthy diet by showing them the GI score for thousands of everyday food items. You can also check the Glycemic Load. Arguably an even better indicator of the health value of the foods you eat.

***** A Low GI Diet - Glycemic Index Search is the original Low GI App (established 2008) is the only App that allows you to store the GI Score of your favorite foods. . *****

Carbohydrates release glucose into the bloodstream as they break down. Some carbohydrates break down faster than others. The Glycemic Index (or GI) is a measure of how fast different foods break down, with 100 representing glucose itself.

Low GI Foods (GI of 55 or less) release glucose slowly and are considered healthy. Some examples are fruit, such as apples and peaches, or pasta.

Medium GI Foods (GI between 56 and 69) release glucose more rapidly so are not as healthy as Low GI Foods. Potatoes are an example of Medium GI Foods.

High GI Foods (GI over 70) release glucose the fastest and are the least healthy. Some examples are white bread and white rice.

Glycemic Load (or GL) is a new measure added in this update. It combines the GI score of a food and the amount of carbohydrates in that food.

Low GL Foods (GL of 10 or less) are considered most healthy.

Medium GL Foods (GL between 11 and 19) are in the middle.

High GL Foods (GL over 20) are the least healthy.

Generally GI foods are also low GL foods. But some high GI foods such as watermelon (GI=72) are low GL Foods (GL=4). This is because watermelon contains a very low amount of carbohydrates.

This app enables you to search a list of 3,000 foods using multiple and/or partial word searches. Simply press the search box and enter your search via the keypad. You can also scroll through the items. Then click on the row of your choice and the full text of the food will appear followed by it's Glycemic Index, Glycemic Load, serve size and carbs per serve.

Disclaimer:

Glycemic Index is measured under experimental conditions. Each person has their own unique glycemic response. Therefore the data contained in this app should be used only as a guide. People who require a low GI Diet for medical conditions such as diabetes should consult with a trained professional before undertaking any change in diet.

Customer Reviews

Only one issue... (4 stars)
I like this application. It shows a simple, straightforward report on many foods, suitable for a quick check while shopping. My only grumble is that the app came with several dozen "favorite" foods pre-defined and it took time to go through and manually delete all the favorites that are not MY favorites...on each device where I have installed the app. A few as an example would be better than dozens and dozens.

Good for what it is (4 stars)
This app is good for looking up foods. However, if you really want to incorporate a low GI diet, a GI daily tracker is a must. The GI tracker gives you daily totals of proteins, fats, calories and the glycemic load. I use both!

What Happened? (2 stars)
I was using this app several times a day until the last update. It is unusable and comes up with irrelevant results in search. The interface has been made more complex and confusing. I tried to contact the developer directly through the app, but could find a way to do it. I'm giving it 2 stars just because it used to be helpful.
